Comflix Studios Case Study
Challenge:
Comflix Studios produces a unique set of comic books made into short, multi-episode films, complete with sound, music, and visual effects. They determined the Internet was the best delivery method for this product. The existing Comflix site was built around pay per download content with previews and limited amounts of content and design. Before adding their latest content, Comflix wanted to upgrade the site to stream the films free, as well as including download and "post to blog" options. The goal was to make the site generate revenue through advertising and also have a higher level of user interaction and user-generated content.
Cypress Solution:
Working from a design template chosen by the client, Cypress applied "Web 2.0" look and feel enhancements fitting a site of this genre. The use of a template saved considerable upfront design costs. The site was built on a .NET 2.0 framework with a simple SQL database holding all the dynamic content. Using SQL Server Express and .NET, we were able to keep the initial cost outlay low, but also provide a solid foundation for future expansion. Cypress created a complete set of modules that handle ad banner rotation, Google Analytics tracking, user generated content uploads, and integration with third party email list management tools. Additionally, we created a complete Flash video playback, download, and user comments system. Users can leave a comment, forward the link to a friend, or post the film on their website or blog. To keep the home page fresh, Comflix wanted to use news stories from another site's RSS feed. Cypress created a system that parses the feed and displays up to the minute comic book news. We also assisted Comflix in deciding on a dedicated hosting solution for their site.
Technologies Employed: .NET 2.0, Flash, SQL Server Express, third party email list management tools, Google Analytics.
